Saramark Builds New Elementary School Classrooms for the Dublin Unified School District

Permanently installed buildings meet President Clinton's goal to "get students out of trailers and into high-tech classrooms."

San Jose, California, March 25, 2000 - Saramark, Inc., a San Jose-based provider of pre-engineered and permanently assembled school buildings, announces it is nearing completion of the first phase of a new 21,000 square-foot classroom facility for the Dublin Unified School District.

Saramark's $2.3-million-dollar contract provides 21 classrooms and two restroom buildings at the new Dougherty Elementary School in Emerald Park. Emerald Park is at the center of Dublin's eastward expansion area that includes new housing, retail, and corporate office space. Located at Hibernia Drive and Central Parkway, the new school is scheduled for completion in time to open for the fall 2000 school year.

With a total construction timeframe of less than 6 months, Dougherty will be built much faster than schools assembled by traditional methods. In the past two years about 1,000 residential housing units have sprung up around Emerald Park. SummerHill Homes, Pulte, Richmond American, JPI and Archstone Communities built the residential component to the new area of Dublin. A new elementary school was part of the original development agreement when Alameda County sold the land to developers.

The Saramark classrooms use galvanized steel framing materials and are built on concrete, slab-on-grade floors. A pitched, standing-seam metal roof enables the structures to have vaulted interior ceilings and additional windows that enhance the learning environment. Saramark manufactures the classroom components at its Lathrop plant in the Central Valley and permanently assembles the wall panels and roof trusses on-site.

Project architect Erwin Lee of Deems Lewis McKinley Architecture, a San Francisco-based firm, said the Saramark classrooms are being customized around a core administration and media center facility that will be assembled on-site using traditional methods.

Mr. Lee customized the Saramark buildings to blend with the architectural theme of the core facility by maintaining similar visual lines, roof slopes and a complementary scale to the overall project. Moreover, the design calls for craftsman-style architectural details, including a patina green metal roof, trellises, broad overhangs, and a warm color palette so the cement plaster exteriors blend in with the surrounding residential area. Mr. Lee said the fast yet permanent installation is a compelling reason for more California school district officials to consider Saramark classrooms for facilities upgrades and expansions.

The unique, pre-engineered building system allowed the Dublin Unified School District to easily increase its original order from a total of 15 classrooms to 21 classrooms, with no delay in the project timeframe. Saramark is providing two wings of six 24' by 40' classrooms with a 12'x 40' restroom on one end for the elementary grades, and a kindergarten facility consisting of three 30' x 32' classrooms in phase one. The general contractor is Bruns Belmont Construction Inc. of San Jose, Calif.

"As a result of our flexibility in design, the Dublin Unified School District was able to build customized classrooms at a reasonable price. With concrete floors and a steel structural system, Saramark offers a permanent solution to growing California communities," said Mark Collishaw, president of Saramark.

This is Saramark's first school facility in the Tri-Valley area. Previously Saramark has supplied school facilities for school districts in San Jose, San Mateo, Tracy, Pacific Grove and San Bruno, among other cities.

Efficient and quick to build, the Saramark buildings honor the spirit of a nationwide effort to "build or modernize schools to get students out of trailers and into high-tech classrooms," said President Clinton in his most recent State of the Union address. The buildings come complete with standard pre-installed communications conduit in the walls. The conduit enables computers and other technological devices to be connected with minimal effort. Outlets can also be installed in additional locations if the classroom is intended for a computer center or science lab.
