Saramark Builds New Campus for San Bruno Park Elementary School District

San Jose, California, March 3, 2001 - Saramark, Inc., a San Jose-based provider of pre-engineered and permanently assembled school buildings has announced it is re-assemblingand expanding Belle Air Elementary School in San Bruno while school is still in session.

The two phase, $3.37 million upgrade will provide the school with state-of-the art facilities for a student population of 450.

Saramark is mid-way through the first phase of construction, which is to add 14 classrooms and two restrooms on a former asphalt surface area. The expansion is scheduled to be complete in mid-June. As a safety consideration, the classroom slab foundations -- that required 500 yards of concrete -- were poured early in the morning in deference to the neighborhood.

In the second phase of construction, which commences once school is out for the summer, the district will demolish existing buildings and Saramark will replace them with a new administrative building, seven classrooms, two storage rooms and restrooms. The second phase is scheduled for completion in late October.

"Our pre-approved method of construction takes months off the state approval process and building schedule and reduces the cost of construction by as much as 40 percent," said Mark Collishaw, president of Saramark. "Moreover, teachers tell us the classrooms provide kids with an excellent learning environment because the design enables a lot of natural light to enter the rooms," said Mr. Collishaw.

Portions of Belle Air Elementary School, in fact, will be customized because of its proximity to San Francisco International Airport. Walls will be thicker -- 6 inches instead of standard 4-inch walls, with greater insulation in them to abate sound. Upgraded, sound-reducing windows are being installed throughout the campus to minimize noise from aircraft take-offs and landings.

"The redevelopment of Belle Air Elementary School is very positive for the children here and the community as a whole," said Dr. Donna Elder, superintendent of San Bruno Park Elementary School District. "By mitigating noise and improving aesthetics, we will enhance the educational experience for our students. And by doing the renovation in two phases, no one is inconvenienced or put in temporary classrooms," she said.

With a total construction time of approximately nine months, the re-built elementary school will be assembled faster and more efficiently than schools built utilizing traditional methods. In addition, there will be considerable savings to San Bruno Park Elementary School District.

Saramark classrooms and administrative buildings use galvanized steel framing materials and are built on concrete, slab-on-grade floors -- unlike portable classrooms. A pitched, standing-seam metal roof enables the Saramark structures to have vaulted interior ceilings and larger windows. Saramark manufactures the classroom components at its Lathrop plant in the Central Valley and permanently installs the wall panels and roof trusses on-site.

Classroom Features
Each design calls for craftsman-style architectural details and may include custom colored metal roofs, broad overhangs and warm colors so the exteriors blend in with the surrounding residential area. Schools can choose between wood or stucco siding. Interiors are spacious with vaulted ceilings that maximize natural light. The fast yet permanent installation is a compelling reason for more California school district officials to consider Saramark classrooms for facilities upgrades and expansions.

"With concrete floors and a steel structural system, Saramark classrooms are built to last and provide permanent solutions to the educational needs of growing California communities," said Mr. Collishaw.

Saramark is building its second school in San Bruno. Their first San Bruno project was a kindergarten classroom at El Crystal Elementary School during the summer of 1999. More recently, Saramark assembled a 21-classroom school in Dublin -- Dougherty Elementary School. The company has previously supplied classroom facilities for school districts in San Jose, Santa Clara, San Mateo, Tracy and Stockton, among other cities.
